Kaluki Rummy Rules

Kaluki Rummy (a.k.a. Kalooki Rummy) is a popular variation of Rummy card games that is very similar to its cousin, Gin Rummy, but with several distinct differences in the rules. The most notable feature in Kaluki Rummy rules is the presence of the Jokers, which can take the place of any missing card in a Meld (Set or Run). There is also no Knocking or Laying Off phase in Kaluki Rummy rules, as found in other Rummy card games like Gin Rummy.

Kaluki Rummy Rules – Objective

The object of Kaluki Rummy is to run out of cards and rack up the highest score. This is done by playing multiple hands of Kaluki Rummy in which the players attempt to get rid of all of the cards in their hand by Melding Sets and Runs and Building on the Melds of other players. Running out of cards awards the hand and subsequent score, but it is the first player to reach the goal score that wins the game.

Kaluki Rummy Rules – Useful Terms

The following terms and definitions will help you to learn how to play Kaluki Rummy.

Set: A type of Meld with three or more cards of the same value, such as 7-7-7, or A-A-A-A.

Run: A type of Meld with four or more cards that run in sequence. Runs must contain all cards of the same suit, such as 2h-3h-4h-5h, or 8c-9c-Tc-Jc-Qc.

Jokers: Kaluki Rummy involves the use of 2 Jokers, which can be used as universal wild cards, completing any Set or Run in its original Melding state. Once played, another player may steal the Joker for his own Melds according to the following conditions. If the Joker is within a Set, it may be taken by replacing it with another card belonging to that set, provided the new card does not match any suit already in the Set. If the Joker is already in a Set that contains 3 cards of different suits, plus a Joker, it may not be taken. If a Joker appears in a Run, it may only be taken by replacing the exact card needed (i.e. 5h-6h-J-8h needs a 7h to steal the Joker).

Meld: All Sets and Runs are called Melds. Whenever a player plays Sets and/or Runs on the table, this is called Melding. Melding is the easiest way to get rid of the most cards in your hand. According to Kaluki Rummy rules, a player must Meld a minimum of 51 points onto the table the first time they Meld (see “Kaluki Rummy Rules - Scoring” below for point values).

Building: Once a player has Melded, they are allowed to Build on the Melds of other players. Building is when you add relevant cards to existing Sets and Runs. For instance, a Set of 4h-4c-4s could hold a 4d; a run of 7c-8c-9c-Tc could hold a 6c or Jc.

Going Out: A player is said to be Going Out when he/she places their final card on a relevant Set or Run, or on the Discard Pile, thus running completely out of cards. Normal score is taken and the game proceeds if no one has yet reached the goal score.

Going Kaluki: Going Kaluki is another form of Going Out, but only occurs when the winner plays all of his cards on the same play. This means he/she must make their first Meld, place any relevant Building cards and, if necessary, discard a final card on the Discard Pile, running completely out of cards all in the same play.

Kaluki Rummy Rules – Game Play

Kaluki Rummy is a game for 4 players using 106 cards, comprised of 2 standard 52-card decks plus 2 Jokers. At the start of a new game, players will each draw one card, and the highest card determines the first dealer. The deal move counter-clockwise with each new hand until the game is over. The cards are shuffled, cut and dealt, each player receiving 13 cards. The remaining deck is placed in the center of the table, face down, as the Draw Pile.

Players then take turns, starting with the player left of the dealer. A turn starts with the player drawing one card from the Draw Pile (or taking the top card on the Discard Pile). The player may Meld if they wish to, so long as the first Meld contains at least 51 points. After, a player can Meld any other Sets or Runs, as well as Building on the Melds of other players. The turn ends when the player discards one card on the discard Pile.

Play continues in this fashion until one player runs completely out of cards, either Going Out, or going Kaluki. Score is taken and the game continues, unless one player reaches the goal score, thereby winning the game.

Kaluki Rummy Rules – Scoring & Winning

At the end of each Kaluki Rummy hand, score is calculated as follows. Also note that the point values shown below are used to add up each players first Meld, which must contain 51+ points.
Aces = 11 points
10s and Face Cards = 10 points
2 – 9 = Face Value
Joker = 25 points

When a player runs out of cards, all other players must count up the value of cards remaining in their hand. The winner of the game receives all of these points added to their score.

If a player Goes Kaluki, all other players will receive a Penalty Score of 25 points. This means they must subtract 25 points from their current total, if necessary receiving a negative score.

In order to win a game of Kaluki Rummy, a player must reach the goal score. This score is preset and agreed upon before the game begins. A typical Kaluki Rummy goal score might be anywhere from 250 to 500 points. The first player to reach this score wins!
